DEATH VALLEY JUNCTION, Inyo County — Travelers planning a cross-border excursion from Death Valley Junction to nearby Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge in Nevada should know that a popular boardwalk is under reconstruction.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service reports that Point of Rocks Road and Boardwalk are closed from September 15 to November 15, 2026. The agency describes the project as a complete boardwalk rebuild intended to preserve accessibility, wildlife-viewing opportunities and educational features.
Which areas remain available?
While the Point of Rocks boardwalk is being rebuilt, the refuge lists Crystal Spring and Longstreet boardwalks as open, subject to conditions and any later notices. The visitor center is listed as open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., while other refuge paths and boardwalks are generally open sunrise to sunset. Confirm current status before making the trip.
Important geographic distinction
Ash Meadows is in Nevada, not California. It is included here because Death Valley Junction is a gateway community for travelers reaching the refuge across the state line. This closure is not a notice that California State Route 190 or Death Valley National Park is closed.
How to check the road before traveling
The refuge recommends reaching the visitor center using the west entrance from Highway 373 for passenger vehicles and recreational vehicles. Some approach roads are dirt, and the refuge advises checking vehicle requirements before using alternative access routes.
The refuge lists 775-372-5435 as a visitor contact.
Primary source: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service — Ash Meadows. The scheduled November 15 end date is not a guarantee the facility will reopen on that exact day.
