DEATH VALLEY JUNCTION, Inyo County — Visitors looking for a short walk at Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, just across the Nevada state line, can explore the federally maintained Crystal Springs Boardwalk while another refuge attraction undergoes repair.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s facility page describes Crystal Springs as a 0.9-mile round-trip boardwalk immediately behind the refuge visitor center. It is identified as wheelchair-accessible, with benches, viewing scopes and interpretive panels; bicycles are not allowed on refuge boardwalks.
What makes the spring distinctive?
The refuge reports that the spring produces approximately 2,800 gallons of water per minute and remains around 87°F. The clear pool and surrounding wetland provide an opportunity to learn about rare desert species and spring-fed ecosystems. Wildlife sightings, however, are not guaranteed on any particular visit.
Where to start
The visitor center is listed at 8757 Spring Meadows Road South, Amargosa Valley, Nevada, with regular hours 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. The boardwalk is generally open from sunrise to sunset. General refuge admission is free. Travelers should verify road and boardwalk conditions with staff, particularly during construction elsewhere in the refuge.
Because this attraction is in Nevada, state traffic rules and local travel conditions differ from those in Inyo County. The refuge recommends the Highway 373 west entrance for most passenger vehicles and RVs.
